This collective monograph was prepared by ethnographers from the N.N. Miklukho-Maklai Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology. Based on field study results, the book describes Russian Orthodox religious traditions: veneration of holy objects, secret charity, life in the congregation, religious fasts, the role of the priest in the Russian army, visiting hermit monks and monasteries, etc. Various social groups are included in this study: nobility, peasantry, merchants, soldiers, and priests. The second part of the book consists of new publications of document materials on the subject: letters, parish documentation, articles and studies of the 19th century. Among the contributors to this collection are: A.V. Buganov, M.M. Gromyko, O.V. Kirichenko, I.A. Kremleva, T.A. Listova, G.N. Melekhova, L.A. Tul'tseva, L.A. Verkhovskaia, T.A. Voronina, etc.
