Product Description
English summary: This volume contains significant published and unpublished essays written by the Judaism and New Testament scholar Friedrich Avemarie, who died unexpectedly in October 2012. Set against the background of an excellent knowledge of the rabbinic literature and with a decidedly theological interest in the New Testament, the contributions provide critical impulses for New Testament and Judaistic discourse. Key topics are the rabbinic theology of martyrdom, rabbinic and New Testament soteriology and anthropology, the parables of Jesus, the historical background of the Book of Acts, Paul's doctrine of justification in relation to the so-called New Perspective on Paul, the Israel question in the theology of Saint Paul, and questions about the history of salvation and the free will in Paul's gospel. Five of the essays are published here for the first time.
Review
"The editors, and his colleagues and family members who aided them, are to be warmly thanked for bringing together so much that otherwise might have got lost in indices and contents lists. They have offered a fitting tribute to a significant scholar and a signal of how much more might have been expected had he been granted more time." ----
