The twelfth century was characterised by intense contacts and exchanges between Byzantium and the Latin West. Many Westerners entered the service of the Byzantine emperor, variously working as translators, interpreters, advisers and envoys. This book focusses on these Latin figures at the Byzantine court, examining their knowledge, their work, and their self-image.
