Structure as Design

Structure as Design is a unique exploration of the way designers use the necessary structural elements of a building as a part of its interior design. Edgy, intriguing, and modern, each of these interiors adopts industrial building materials or the physical structure of the building—support beams, heating and ventilation systems, partitions, fenestration—as interior design elements.

Examples include the work of Finish architect Riema Pietola, who uses concrete to great effect in the Cavela Church, and Toy Ito’s use of punched metal on his Tower of Winds in Japan.
