This is a book of memoirs by Issak Fil'shtinskii, a historian and orientalist, about the years of political repression and the years he spent in camp: 1949-1955. Fil'shtinskii considered himself a lucky man: he came home relatively young and still healthy enough to have a fresh start in life. He writes about the people he met there and their life stories. "There are only three social classes in our country: those who were in camp, those who are still there, and those who are going to be there". Each story in this book like a small novel. He portrays the life in camp as a tragic absurdity.
