While thus far ancient democracy has been mainly studied in relation to classical Greece, this volume analyzes the following Hellenistic period and democracy in the city states of Athens, Kos, Miletus and Rhodes. It focuses on central political institutions as well as respective political practices. The picture that emerges shows that in these places democracy displayed a vitality comparable to classical Athens and cannot be reduced to the idea of a small ruling class. German text.
