This book shows the tragic consequences of the Stalin's terror on the state of demographic studies and the sources of demographic history in the USSR. The authors analyze how sources and methods of demography as a science were twisted, data were destroyed in the course of the 1937 census and in demographic reports to hide the consequences of mass terror, forced collectivization and migrations, human losses in the "archipelago GULAG" and in WWII. Supplement includes reprints from the Soviet propaganda publications and archival documents (pp. 225-316).
