Torch of New Russia

Russian-speakers in eastern Ukraine were outraged at the Maydan Revolution in Kiev in February 2014. Mass protests arose in eastern cities such as Kharkov and Donetsk against the new regime. While most of the protests were successfully coopted or crushed by forces loyal to the new Ukrainian government, those in Donetsk and Lugansk were not. That was in large part due to the hard work of political organizers such as Pavel Gubarev, whose movement laid the foundation of the Donbass Uprising that sparked the First Donbass War of 2014-2015.

This book is Pavel Gubarev's memoir of his experiences in both the Donbass Uprising and the events leading up to it. He was a prominent pro-Russian protest leader, political prisoner, politician, and military organizer. First published in Russian in 2015, his memoir, which includes a lengthy discussion of his political ideology, is now available in English for the first time. It is an invaluable primary source for those interested in understanding the origins of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
