The Concession of Évora Monte : The Failure of Liberalism in Nineteenth-Century Portugal

Throughout the first half of the nineteenth century, the Portuguese monarchy, the power at the center of the Portuguese government, was a contested position. While rebellion and civil war led to the establishment of a constitutional monarchy, they failed to establish a liberal society in what continued to be a traditional agricultural and fishing economy.
