Preventing suicide has traditionally been a focus of psychiatric study. Now, in Suicide: Closing the Exits, Drs. Clarke and Lester have established a basis for another methodology for preventing suicide. The authors maintain that eliminating the opportunity for suicide - the removal or restriction of the availability of such devices as drugs, lethal weapons, and carbon monoxide - is an effective preventative strategy. The objection that this theory necessarily results in displacement of opportunity rather than prevention is comprehensibly addressed as well. This book offers a unified theory, whose prediction and resultant findings are often surprising.
