The 'Lai de l'ombre', by Jean Renart, is a narrative poem dating from about 1220. It is a love story, telling of the winning of a lady by a knight in a manner which is wittier than it is courtly. The present edition includes an introduction (both literary and linguistic), variants from the seven manuscript versions, commentary on paleographic, literary, linguistic and historical details, line by line, and a glossary of terms.
