This book contains eight papers from an August 2009 seminar held at the University of Sergio Arboleda's Institute of Mathematics and Applications, in honor of Colombian mathematician Jairo Antonio Charris-Castañeda (1932-2003). The papers discuss recent developments in the field and describe several approaches to the geometrical and algebraic aspects of differential and difference equations, such as Lie symmetry groups and their invariants, differential Galois theory, group theoretical methods in physics, and geometrization of mechanics. Some specific topics include a reduction method for higher order variational equations, applications of summability, the structure of time and inertial forces in Lagrangian mechanics, and differential invariant algebras. There is no subject index, and information on the editor is not given. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
