There is a deeply rooted opinion that Russia formed an advanced science and created many productive scientists. S. Romanovskii, a well know historian of Russian science, disputes this point of view. According to the author, Russian science is a not a product of its own culture, it was imported, "dragged" from Europe, and was not really used by absolutist regimes. The soviet government also needed only those fields which made it stronger in a military or ideological sense. The author shows that the "dragged" science has ceased to exist, and a new one has yet to be developed. The author show the roots of the myth about soviet science and its scientific authorities.
