Frederick Douglass was born as a slave. After changing his owners several times, he got lucky with one of their wifes, she treated him well and tought him to read and to write.
Eventually he managed to escape and became an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. Frederick Douglassbecame a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, gaining note for his oratory and incisive antislavery writings.
He was the most influencal African American of the 19th century. In three very notable autobiographies he wrote about his struggles and experiences:
