This is the first collection of articles in western and Russian Japanology on the political culture of ancient Japan. It focuses on the Nara and Heian periods, and includes fully annotated translations and research papers which deal with various aspects of the theory of government and its practical implementation. Particular stress is made on the image of emperor (tenno). This collection also shows how Chinese political theory was adapted for the needs of the Japanese state. Among the contributors are: L.M.
