A.D. Menshikov (1673-1729) was a famous courtier and comrade-in-arms of Peter the Great. He made a dazzling career from a peddler who sold pastry in the streets of Moscow to “his Highness Lofty Prince” and “Generalissimo” and won impressive victories in the Northern War of 1700-1721. After Peter’s death in 1725 he became de facto ruler of Russia under the dowager Empress Katherine I and Peter II (1715-1730). In 1727 through the efforts of rivals he was exiled to the village of Berezovo. Supplements include bibliographic references, dates of his life.
