The guide given to us by the author, a senior figure in both American music and bibliography, is divided into four broad sections: "chronological perspectives," "contextual perspectives" (geographic, ethnic, and personal) "musical media and genres," and "bibliographical forms" (including print literature regarding online databases). Each entry is numbered for indexing and annotated. Since the Bicentennial, study of American music has intensified in academic circles.
