Once a journalist and civil servant in her native Iran, Afshar (politics and women's studies, U. of York) remains active in the country's feminist politics. She looks at the growing rapprochement between secularist and Islamist women in pursuit of common goals. The phenomenon, she argues, demonstrates how women can and must overcome ethnocentric views and realize that women everywhere seek similar goals and face similar problems, but must prioritize them and use available tools according to the circumstances.
