This volume figures among the Netherlands Phonetic Archives, a series of monographs and edited volumes of papers reporting recent advances in the field of phonetics and experimental phonology. While the monographs within this volume examine the phonetics and the learning of the phonemes of certain European and Asian languages, the volume is dedicated to a certain Estonian woman of the twentieth century, Ilse Lehiste, who had an extraordinary gift to acquire native-like mastery of the phonemes of German, Russian, English, and Serbo-Croatian . . . mastery sufficient to convince native speakers of those languages that Ilse was also a native speaker. Ilse's story is sometimes cited as evidence that it is indeed possible for some adults to acquire native-like accents in foreign languages.
