This new documentary biography of Fedor Tiutchev (1803-73) portrays him more as a person than as a poet of genius. He seems not to have been very successful in his life: he never reached any high position in his diplomatic and government career; only two books were of his verses were published during his long life and both not with his consent; he was an original political thinker but never had had time to present his ideas in a systematic way; he was loved by women, but he made them suffer.
