Petr Baranovskii (1892-1984) was an outstanding Russian architect-restorer and a scholar in the history of Old Russian architecture. The first volume of his archive from the A.V. Shchusev Research Museum of Architecture contains materials of his field work at Solovki, one of the islands in the White sea near the Arctic Circle, in 1922-23. It was first known as Solovki monastery (since the 15th century) and later as a place of exile for many martyrs of the Soviet regime including clergy. Solovki is also known for its unprecedented wooden architecture. This is was a dramatic period in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church. The next volumes of Baranovskii's materials will cover his studies of other places and architectural sites. Also included is a catalog of all materials connected with Solovki, name and subject indices. Richly illustrated.
