The success of Germany's blitzkrieg tactics in the early stages of the Second World War made Hitler's relentless advance seem unstoppable. By 1943 however, the picture was changing: defeat at Stalingrad, surrender in Tunisia and the loss of Sicily all demonstrated that the tide had turned. This study focuses on this pivotal year of the war as the Wehrmacht, now unable to mount its feared lightning attacks, was forced onto the back foot.
