Managing commuters’ behaviour : a new role for companies

Round table 121 was devoted to the concept of innovations in the workplace to change commuting behaviour. It considered the vital role of encouraging wage earners to use public transport in meeting environmental objectives, particularly the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Options offered to employers included the recruitment of mobility managers and the provision of government support for such initiatives. The practice in the US of the provision of free parking to employees was discussed and the alternative solution of cash-out schemes to those not using the free parking offered. Several examples of employee mobility schemes in Europe were also considered.
