In this Summer School of March and April 2002, mathematicians and physicists introduced principles of algebraic geometry and string theory and the relationship between the two. These proceedings include an article on the geometry of string theory by Douglas and papers examining the current interests of the lecturers, including such topics as manifolds of special holonomy, supergravity, supersymmetry, D-branes, the McKay correspondence and the Fourier-Mukai transform. A second volume, in the form of a monograph, will focus on mirror symmetry from the homological and SYZ points of view, derived categories, Dirichlet branes, topological strong theory, and more material on the McKay correspondence.
