The June 2010 conference celebrates the resolution of the Poincare conjecture characterizing the 3D sphere in topological terms by the young Russian mathematician Grigoriy Perelman. Six lectures from the conference review the background of Poincare’s work leading up to his conjecture, the evolution of geometric structures on 3-manifolds, classification of manifolds in light of the Poincare conjecture solution, and geometric analytic approaches to studying the topology and geometry of 4-manifolds.
