This collection of inter-disciplinary studies focuses on the diverse cultural, intellectual and scientific life at the papal court of Avignon. More especially, the contributors examine the contents of the papal library, the production of manuscripts and the theological debates that took place there. Among the subjects discussed are Arnaldo de Villanova and Avignon, the Bible and the anti-pope Clement VII, John XXII and the University of Paris, theological authority at the papal court of Avignon, Conrad of Megenberg and the causes of the plague, and a new inventory of manuscripts of Pope Clement VI. The papers originated at a seminar organised by the Belgian Academy at Rome (2002-3) and two sessions at Kalamazoo in 2003 and 2004. Papers are in French and English.
