A newly planned highway was about to be built around Xiangxi, an ancient village beside the Millennium Road, and it attracted a great many outlanders who were engaged in road building and also many people with steel machineries. In the middle of conflicting reality, these people spent great efforts and intelligence, even esteem and lives on the construction of this expensive road. With the arrival of the road builders, the once peaceful hometown was involved in turmoil. The ancient village was ruined and reestablished in the wave of coerced development: the land was expropriated, the houses were demolished, the old trees died, the temples were rebuilt and the village went through tremendous changes. Meanwhile, the rapid development brought great and enduring impact on consciences and morality. Based on his close contact with the employees of Road and Bridge Company, the road-building worker, the contractors, the project supervisors, the local villagers and the local officials, the author records the process before and after the construction of the highway with videos and writings, and he vividly narrates the stories of those road builders. Besides, the author meticulously depicts the fate of a small village transformed by the flow of times; he objectively reveals the truths and secrets within the industry and also profoundly displays the honors and costs paid by China in pursuit of the rapid economic development.
