This book is an authoritative textbook on the western science before modern times and also an excellent reading material about the scientific history. Combining the European traditional philosophy, religion and system background, it profoundly introduces the scientific achievements of various aspects from the ancient Greece to the late Middle Ages with easy language within the length of a book, trying to avoid explaining the ancient achievements from the scientific views today. Since being published in 1992, it has earned roaring acclaim. In 2007, the author made some important revision, and nearly every page has been added or revised. It has especially expanded the contents related to Byzantine science, Mesopotamian astronomy, alchemy and astrology in Middle Ages, etc. The chapter about Islamic science and the last chapter discussing the contributions the Middle Ages has made to the scientific development in 16th and 17th century are the same as the first version. The Chinese version is translated based on the new version.
