Federal Street Press' New Explorer series is an inexpensive line of basic reference texts "created in cooperation with the editors of Merriam-Webster." The series includes a College Dictionary , Desk Encyclopedia and a Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms . These are printed on inexpensive paper without use of color, and all have fewer entries than their Merriam-Webster counterparts. This volume, for example, has 100,000 entries where the new M-W's 11th Collegiate has 165,000 (the New Explorer does not, however, contain proper names). Etymological history is far more simplified here than in the Collegiate . For those less familiar with dictionary use, there is a separate dictionary of abbreviations (incorporated in the Collegiate ). Suitable for high school, ESL, or poor-of-pocket college students.
