This is the first monograph on the subject of giving names by the House of Riurik during their entire dynasty. The issue of names is closely connected to hereditary rights, power strategy, and political competition. On the other hand principles of giving names enhanced the unity of the wide spread dynasty and the stability of power privileges. The monograph also looks into the coexistence of original and Christian names, appearance and evolution of multiple names, choice of patron saints and family patrons as a part of a dynastic naming.
