This volume deals with the typology of diachronic phonology. Different languages not related to each other however often show similar processes under comparable circumstances, which can be used to compute the tendencies and probabilities of change. The knowledge of these probabilities is necessary in order to reconstruct older scenarios from known data. the main aim of this volume is thus an extensive data collection that is limited to processes of consonantal change in the Indogermanic language family and two other families - Semitic and Uralic.
