She was treated for overwhelming sepsis and transferred to the hospital, but sadly her life could not be saved. During the course of Charlene’s short illness the diagnosis shifts from infection to sexual assault and homicide, and her grieving family finds themselves publicly engulfed in a criminal investigation. What unfolds next is a surreal set of events so improbable that they seem fictitious.

About the Author

Felicity Goodyear-Smith is a qualified general practitioner and forensic physician who has acted as expert witness or medical adviser in a number of trials, including the hearings involving George Gwaze. She is now the academic head of the department of general practice and primary health care at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. She is also the founding editor of the
Journal of Primary Health Care.
