In this book, the author argues that the welfare state in process of planning at that time moved a step towards dictatorship instead of continuing fighting for personal freedom in peacetime. To oppose such a planned economy, the author forcefully reiterated the classical liberal point of view that he has consistently adhered to. At the same time, he also allows for moderate government activities, but this is limited to those forms of activities in line with his concept of the rule of law. The authors liberalism involves the appreciation of many useful social systems, but these systems can only be the consequences of the peoples spontaneous action, and can not be the results designed by people. In view of this, the author believes that the good society does not simply rely on the pursuit of self-interest within the legal framework provided by the government. On the contrary, it should rely on a complex set of framework of laws, moral traditions and rules of conduct. The characteristics of this framework should be understood and recognized by most members of society.
