That crime is increasing in America daily is a well-known fact, and is admitted by all who have studied the subject of crime, and its causes and cures. There are some who argue the point that we have uo more crime than we had forty years ago, and say that the only difference is, that forty or fifty years ago we did not hear of the crimes that were committed, and now we hear of all. But, reader, if you will stop and reason for a moment, you will be convinced that we have more crime in the great civilized country of America than we ever had before. We admit that there was a time when we did not hear of as many crimes, murders, robberies and rapes as we hear of now, but one thing we do know, and that is we hear of all the crimes that are committed in our own country, and we can estimate by the county and determine very near what the increase is in the last forty years. Well, you may say that the population is greater now than then. Very well, we will admit all of these facts. Now estimate the population of your county at the time we have designated; estimate the number of murders, thefts and rapes, then estimate your population, now and then; investigate your crimes at the present time and you will be convinced that there is a greater per cent of crime in your country now than there ever was before. The good are certainly growing better; and the mean are growing worse all the time. I am sorry to say that we are going to two extremes. The wicked are getting so desperately wicked, and the Christians are geting so fanatical and are such extremists, that there seems to be no point at which they can come together, and consequently they travel each in their ow...
