During the first half of the nineteenth century the Paris medical school was pre-eminent throughout all Europe. For six decades students and doctors from all over the world flocked to Paris to attend the revolutionary school where virtuosi of diagnosis were performing miracles of observation in identifying new diseases, and where medicine and surgery were being reunited after 1600 years of separation. This study describes this great epoch in the history of medicine.
