During the 1950s and 1960s political violence and disorder increased dramatically throughout the world. The causes of violence and instability in the developing countries of Asia, Africa, and Latin America, argues Samuel P. Huntington, are to be found in the lag in the development of viable political institutions behind social and economic change. The author provides valuable insights on age-old problems of political change in both Western and non-Western societies.
