The latest edition of The Dietary Guidelines for Americans will be out later this year. The guidelines encourage individuals to eat a healthful dietone that focuses on foods and beverages that help achieve and maintain a healthy weight, promote health, and prevent chronic disease. The most unexpected news released so far is probably the about-face stance on cholesterol. Another biggie, sugar is the new fat!
Nutrition For Dummies, 6th Edition, will include 25% new and updated content, including what readers need to know about the new 2015Dietary Guidelines for Americans report and its suggestions for living a nutritionally-sound life. Readers will learn how to make wise food choices based on the new nutritional guidelines, and get updated RDAs on vitamins and nutritional supplements. New and updated information includes: A new focus on the environment asking people to choose more fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and other plant-based foods. The word is creating a "sustainable" diet, meaning foods friendly to the earth, i.e. plants rather than animals. The guidelines for USDA's "My Plate" that replaced the well-known food pyramid in 2010 and are designed to help Americans with healthy eating. The guidelines will also be integrated into school lunch meal patterns and other federal eating programs. A new stance on cholesterol:The proposed change reflects a major shift in the scientific view of cholesterol that has taken place in recent years. Although serum cholesterol is still considered an important risk factor, cholesterol consumed in food is now thought to play a relatively insignificant role in determining blood levels of cholesterol.Cholesterol is also important for brain health, and helps with the formation of memories. Obesity now being recognized as a disease is one of the top ten conditions crushing healthcare. Information on worldwide trends (i.e., the fact that to date no nation has reversed the bigger body trend), new study showing that many "healthy obese" do not remain healthy.
