The central issue this book cares about is: what is the classic of calligraphy? How can a non-classic written form become the classic of calligraphy? Being on the Shoulders of the Classical Masters is a plaque written by Wu Changshuo for Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, while Juanjuan Hairdressing Salon is the sign of a hairdressing salon in Chongqing. Using these two works, Professor Bai Qianshen explores the nature of calligraphy. Since the rise of stele study in the Qing dynasty, the classic system of calligraphy has been challenged and some naive and immature stone inscription and writing remains are used as copying examples. How do we define calligraphy? And how do we see the classics of calligraphy? These questions are not complex, but they cover many aspects of social culture. From description and analysis of phenomena in ancient and modern calligraphy, this book discusses the above questions.
