Sleeping Dragon left from Tokyo in December 1898 to Ogasawara Islands for fishing expedition but was seriously attacked by a fierce west wind en route and lost all the three anchors; also, the mast was broken and it had to sail to Hawaii for help. After it was repaired, the ship encountered unprecedented waves on the way back, split on a rock at night, and was smashed by the waves. Led by the captain, the sixteen people landed on an uninhabited island in the center of the Pacific. The 16 sailors faced hunger, fear, disease and endless waiting days. If anyone was weak and suspicious, they would be completely annihilated. They divided work positively to set up shelters, collect potable water, weave fishnet, catch fish, feed turtles, bay salt, pick fruits and build a watchtower. They knew it clearly that they had to be prepared to survive on the island for 10 years.
