This book is a classic of the contemporary Russian literature. The book consists of thirteen relatively independent 'narrative short stories', which depict the mysterious Siberia and the people living there as well as their thought about life in a meticulous and deep-going way around the relationship between man and nature. Although the natural environment there is desolate and bitter cold, it is also a fertile land showing the magnificent nature. Although the human footprints are like constant departures and reunions of friends there, they have the dignity of life after life.
