The capital work "The History of Russia" by Vasilii Tatishchev (1686-1750) had always a reputation as a good collection of excerpts from old chronicles lost after the historian's death. The Ukrainian historian Oleksii Tolochko argues with this common perception of Tatishchev's work. He shows that the sources of this work were not "old chronicles" and they do exist: the excerpts of old chronicles are skillful forgeries created by Tatishchev himself. This monograph has special value as an original source study. Bibliographical references.
