Founded in 1216, Penryn stands in a sheltered position at the head of the Penryn River and was—through the end of the 16th century—one of the principal ports in Cornwall. The town prospered with its imports of a wide variety of cargo and exports including tin and copper from the mining industries developed in the Camborne-Redruth area. Bustling Penryn of today is now largely a part of Falmouth but has managed to escape the main tourist industry. Retaining much of its historic past including many buildings dating back to the Tudor, Jacobean, and Georgian periods, the area has been designated as an important conservation area. This study takes the reader on a nostalgic trip into the past. With images depicting all aspects of the town's community, buildings, and industrial heritage, this book will delight residents and visitors past and present.
