Su Tong not only likes the new and to enjoy himself in it, he also likes the traditional and to meditate on Chinese historical events. His wrote the novel Wives and Concubines and Zhang Yimou, a promiment filmmaker, made it into the film named Raise the Red Lantern. The film contended for Oscar Award. Though it did not win the award, it shocked the filmdom and the literary circle in China. Many Chinese people knew the novel through the film and finally fell in love with its lovely author and Su, through the novel, found a unique literary road for himself. Goddess Peak is another collection of short stories by Su and it offers Sus fans a real feast. Collected in the book are Goddess Peak, Calla lily, Spy, Food for Angels, The Westward Suona Players, etc.
