The author spends thirteen years to write about the three villages closely related to her own destiny - Fengsan Village, Fengxing Village and Aikou Village. Although they stretch across Hunan and Hubei and are separated far and apart, the challenge and crisis her relatives are faced with are exactly the same due to their common 'peasant identity'. Through the description of the real and complex circumstances of her relatives in the three villages, by observing the holistic fate of peasants in China in the transformation period and questioning the origin and destination of the Chinese society, Huang Deng also exposes the confusion and bewilderment in her own heart.
