After a brief introduction to early modern rhetoric, Sonnino's book lists hundreds of figures, providing (when applicable) both Greek and Latin names and definitions and examples from Erasmus, Peacham, Quintilian, Scaliger, Cicero, and other relevant rhetoricians. Short later sections on Renaissance genres and styles. A helpful bibliography of "rhetorical textbooks in use in sixteenth-century schools and universities" and other resources. Brief graphical explanations of various organizations of rhetoric (by Quintilian, Ramus, et al.). The book provides both an alphabetical index and a "descriptive index." The latter groups like figures. If you work on early modern text or rhetoric, there's no replacement for this book -- now, alas, long out of print.
