Chicago University, which was headed by Hutchins during 1929 and 1950, stand out among the others and form an unprecedented contrast with other American institutions of higher education. Hutchins and those professors and students who support him conduct serious debates when they are trying to define the goals of higher education. Nearly all teaching staff and a great proportion of student groups---especially undergraduates--- all participate in it. It is so great to spend ones youth in such a great time and great place. The author of this book was then one of the students and later became a professor at Chicago University. He wants to clarify through this book: it is both system and social environment, academic achievement and personal ambitions that make Chicago University during 1930s and 1940s such a special place.
