The Cultural Revolution surged in 1966. Schools suspended classes, with the students in cities 'waging revolution' and 'serving as the Red Guards', who were later sent to villages. The people dispatched for rustication between 1968 and 1980 stood at 17 million. This organized large-scale population migration is actually a thorough political movement entitled as 'Rustication of Educated Youth', which was unprecedented in either the world or Chinese view. This movement had exerted far-reaching influence on this generation of urban young people, not only interrupting their life and depriving them of the opportunity for education, but also impacting their family, the entire urban society and even the rural society. This generation is thus called 'the Lost Generation'. This book written by Pan Mingxiao reveals the overt or covert intention of leaders who launched the movement, the means they used to reach their purpose, and analyzes the consequences their decisions played in the entire society. The book also explores the reason why this 20-year-plus movement (including the smaller-scale movements prior to the 'Cultural Revolution') abruptly came to the end in 1980, and surveys the marks left by the movement on China's society, politics and economy, so as to pinpoint the position it stands in China's modern history.
