Seventeen-year-old Mexican law school student Juan García Madero loves poetry and always skips classes to attend poetic discussion of the poetry class. There he met Arturo Belano and Ulises Lima, founders of the visceral realism poetry. They keep company with other poets and artists, disputing over poetry in bars and indulging themselves in marihuana, alcohol and sex. The spiritual leader of this school of poetry the female poet Cesárea Tinajero is said to be missing many years ago in Sonora Desert in the north of Mexican city. Half for the quest of ideal and half for avoiding the enemies, the poets, together with a young prostitute named Lupe, decide to go deep into the desert to search for her trace. After leaving Mexican city, they are seen in Paris, Tel Aviv, Vienna and Barcelona, doing all kinds of odd jobs to make a living. But none has seen any line written by them. The young poets have gone through twenty-year experience of life and disillusion that are nonreversible This is the first novel of Roberto Bolaños and has amazed the world upon its publication. In 1999, the novel won Roberto the Rómulo Gallegos Prize and Chilean National Council of Books Prize, etc. and Roberto became internationally well-known. He was promoted as one of the first-class Latin American writers and praised as the most original and the most important writer since Marquez.
