The site of ancient Bet She'an/Nysa-Scythopolis is situated in the northern Bet She'an Valley, a wide, central plain that adjoins the Jordan Valley and serves as a natural junction between the Mediterranean coast and Transjordan via the Jezreel Valley on the one hand, and the southern and northern regions of Syria via the Jordan Valley on the other. The Bet She'an Valley lies between the Gilboa' and Samaria mountain ranges in the west and southwest, the Jordan River in the east, and Ramot Kokhav in the northwest.
