Coming of age : the story of our century by those who've lived it

A collective portrait of our times, from the voices of 70 people, aged 70 to 99. Together they give us a panorama of American life & work throughout this century & underscore the ways in which the times have changed. Terkel chose people with the widest range of experiences from around the country, from the angry farmer in Nebraska to the resigned bank president in NY, to those who were at the vanguard of their movements, whether of trade unions, gay liberation, or the arts. They all deplore the degree to which human contact has declined & how traditional hopes & aspirations have been superseded by the ruthless demands of the modern corp.
